This year's Global Citizen Festival is one of the most awaited music festivals in the world. Recently, the team behind the festival Global Poverty Project had announced their star-studded lineups such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran, Usher, and Coldplay's Chris Martin. According to the Business Insider, the event will happen at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg this coming December.
Aside from those iconic artists, the festival will also feature local and international artists who have gathered not only to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth but also serves as a campaign platform to help end extreme poverty. Some well-known personalities such as Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Tyler Perry, and Naomi Campbell are also part of the festival.
Although those who are interested in the festival can get free tickets, they still have put in some work. Hugh Evans, the founder of the Global Poverty Project, explained that to be able to go to the event, participants must have to take a series of "action journeys." These action journeys are short segments of time where one can earn enough points to enter the draw. "If you earn enough points and keep earning, you can enter more times. So, it's essentially gamified: the more actions you take, the more points you earn and the more times you could enter the lottery and therefore your greater chance of winning a ticket. Its democracy at work," Evans added.
The first thing interested festival-goers must do is to download the Global Citizen app, which is free for Android and Apple users, and sign up. After that, they should choose which global issues such as health, education, girls and women issues, education, finance, and innovation they'd like to act on. People will earn points by taking action to the issues mentioned. For instance, you tweeted the President of France urging him/her to take action, you will earn two points. You could also earn points by taking pledges. Through raising awareness in these issues, you'll be given chances to enter into draws for tickets.
